Teacher charged: having sexual relations with student

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that a school teacher, formerly employed by the Solvay Union Free School District, has been charged with having a sexual relationship with a student.

Kolbee R. Kearns (24), of 178 Sunhill Terrace, was charged this morning with rape in the 3rd degree, criminal sexual act in the 3rd degree, and endangering the welfare of a child after Sheriff's Detectives assigned to the Sheriff's Office Abused Persons Unit investigated allegations accusing Kearns of engaging in inappropriate activity with a Solvay High School student.

Sheriff's detectives began investigating Kearns on Tuesday, March 6, after being contacted by school officials. As a result of the investigation, detectives

allege that Kearns had established a relationship with a high school student during the months of January and February 2009. It is also alleged that during this time that Kearns and the student engaged in sexual contact on several occasions.

Kearns has been lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center and will be arraigned in the City of Syracuse Criminal Court this afternoon. Kearns resigned from his teaching position on Monday.

Rape in the 3rd degree is a class E felony, criminal sexual act in the 3rd degree is a class E felony and endangering the welfare of a child is a class A misdemeanor.
