Canastota secures stimulus money

Canastota gets help with WWTP construction

The village of Canastota recently received word it will receive $14 million toward construction and upgrades to its Waste Water Treatment Plant, $500,000 was Omnibus money previously secured by Congressman John McHugh.

According to village Administrator Larry Carpenter $6.75 million is a zero interest loan, $3.75 million is stimulus funds and another $3 million comes from other sources not yet released.

The village approved bonding for the upgrades in the amount of $16.5 million.

"We anticipate the work won't go over that," Carpenter said. "The price of steel and concrete are down from last year. We are hoping the work will be in the $14 million threshold."

The village has already begun replacing equipment using in-house resources for sometime, Carpenter said. Bids for construction will go out to the public in October of this year. Carpenter said they hope construction will begin in January of next year and be complete by January of 2012.
