Sally Tifft-Steve has been chosen by the Canastota Alumni Association as the recipient of the Secretary's Award for 2009. The award is presented to a person who has exhibited outstanding performance and caring for those she comes into contact with in their chosen career.
Tifft-Steve graduated from the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School in 1956. She availed herself of several college courses and computer classes, which assisted her in her choice of career.
Tifft-Steve proved to be very versatile during the 26 years she was employed by the Canastota Central School District. Beginning her employment as a cafeteria aide at South Side School, she soon moved to the position of kindergarten aide. As a result of a grant received by the school, she accompanied other school personnel to Long Island to view a model pre-k program. Working as an aide, Tifft-Steve assisted in the implementation of this program at the Peterboro Street Elementary School.
Following these experiences, she became a special education aide in the Roberts Street grades four through sixth grade building, finally moving into the position of library aide. There she assisted the part-time librarian and, in the absence of a full-time librarian, kept the library open for students' use. During this time, she studied the Geris program, which helped to familiarize her with audio-visual equipment.
In addition to working with students, Tifft-Steve's responsibilities included clerical work and independently setting up and holding book fairs. She would substitute in the school office when needed.
Membership in the Canastota American Legion Auxiliary and other activities keeps Tifft-Steve busy during her retirement years. A member of the Oneida AARP, she has served as vice president and is also on the program, refreshment and hostess committees. She is a past charter member of the Madison County 40/8 Le Femmes and past member of the Canastota PTA.
Tifft-Steve's hobbies include shopping and working outdoors on her lawn and in her garden where she enjoys watching the birds. Traveling on bus tours and attending Nascar races also occupies her time.
