PACE volunteer of the year in Syracuse

PACE CNY held a celebrations to recognize program volunteers and name the winners of the 2nd annual PACE CNY Volunteer of the Year Awards. The 2008 volunteer of the year for PACE CNY South is Louis Overton of Syracuse.

PACE CNY is Loretto's Program of all-inclusive care for the elderly in cooperation with St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center that provides an alternative to traditional nursing home care with home and community-based care services. PACE CNY North is located at 100 Malta Lane, North Syracuse, and PACE CNY South is located at 700 E. Brighton Ave., Syracuse.

Overton's supervisor, PACE CNY South therapeutic recreation specialist Nicole Agerter said, "Louis is wonderful to have at our day center. He always helps transport participants and takes his tasks very seriously.

Our drivers are thankful to have Louis' help, especially during PACE participant outings into the community."

Earlier this year, PACE CNY launched a new volunteer program for its day center sites with the help of student interns from Le Moyne College. Under the leadership of Ginny Turley, PACE CNY director of marketing intake, of Cicero, the volunteer student marketing team created a plan to promote the program that included campaign brochures, flyers and live presentations. Thanks to their efforts, 28 new volunteers are now participating in Loretto's PACE CNY's volunteer training program.

PACE CNY is seeking additional volunteers to help with crafts, friendly visits, meal delivery, stocking and clerical tasks, or to accompany participants to special events outside of the PACE facilities including lunch trips, shopping, picnics, and seasonal trips to the New York State Fair and Lights on the Lake.

To volunteer, contact PACE CNY at 452-5800 and ask for an application form or visit pacecny.org.
