Students at Smith Road Elementary School were be paid a visit from the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park's Zoo to You Program at 9 a.m. Monday June 1.
The visit was the culminating event for the school's "Save the Species" learning experience, which kicked off in April. Each week, students learned about various endangered animals, submitted essays or facts about each species, and then voted to save a species. In order to raise money to donate to the zoo to support the "saved" species, Smith Road's Home School Organization (HSO) sponsored weekly bottle and can drives.
The experience was tied into the school's character education program, teaching students about caring and responsibility. In all, students and staff raised more than four hundred dollars to help care for the animals at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.
