The Town of Lysander Public Safety Fire Training Division recently conducted the New York State Firefighter II Training course that concluded with a graduation ceremony on Tuesday July 14.
Members from the Baldwinsville, Belgium-Cold Springs, Lakeside, Lysander and Phoenix fire departments participated with Onondaga County Fire Instructors Paul Becker, Tony McIntyre, Michael Pitts, Matthew Speech and Tim Wolsey presenting the program. Phoenix Assistant Fire Chief John Delahunt also assisted with the instruction.
The Firefighter II course consisted of 30 hours of instruction designed to be a comprehensive course that prepares the firefighter to respond to emergencies as a team leader. The following subject areas are included in this program based on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter II standards and the Thompson-Delmar Fire Training curriculum:
Advanced firefighter skills
Flammable liquid and gas fire suppression
Firefighting foam application and operations
Initial company response operations
Firefighting strategy and tactics
Vehicle rescue operations
Fire hose testing
Fire hydrant flow testing
Students are required to pass both written and practical skills examinations in order to successfully complete the course and receive New York State Firefighter certification.
Belgium-Cold Springs firefighter Tyler Massaro received the class valedictorian award and Lakeside firefighter Joseph Dantuono received the class salutatorian award both for academic excellence and achievement.
