Canastota hosts NYS Softball Little League Tourney

The Village of Canastota, the Home of the International Boxing Hall of Fame has been hosting the prestigious New York State Softball Little League Tournament from July 25 though the July 29. The five-day tournament is being held at the Fred N. Verro Little League Stadium at the Canastota Recreation Fields located on Joe Stagnitti Lane and N. Main Street, Canastota.

"We feel we hit a home run when Canastota was selected as the host location for this very special sports event," said Canastota Little League President Bill Haddad. "We are now planning to welcome several hundred players, parents and coaches from all across the Empire State. We're proud to be a part of it."

Little League has been around since 1938 and has provided children ages 5 to 16 years old with the opportunity to be a part of an environment which promotes leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship while having fun.

"We are thrilled to host the New York State Little League Softball Tournament," said Mayor Todd Rouse. "We feel we are the perfect venue for this type of tournament, our facilities are in great shape, we are centrally located off the New York State Thruway, and we have a small village atmosphere, with plenty of activities available for the players and their families."

Six teams competed in the five-day tournament. Each team played a minimum of four games and the top two teams will compete for the title of NY State Champions at 5 p.m. Wednesday July 29. The winner will then advance to the Regional Playoffs in Albany, with a chance to advance to Portland, Ore., for the Little League Softball World Series.

"Our plan is to give these young VIP's the red carpet treatment," said Lori Jeffris, Public Relations Director for Canastota Little League. "We are planning activities for the players outside the game, for them to enjoy the hospitality of Central New York."

Teams started to arrive in Canastota Friday July 24, from Long Island, New York City, Albany, Buffalo, the Hudson Valley and from right here in the CNY area. Games started at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday July 25. The same game times will be held for today and Tuesday's games at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and the Wednesday July 25 championship game will start at 5 pm.
