Family life can often be a challenging time as adolescents progress through dynamic transitional phases. Having a strong family foundation with positive and effective communication skills can help families overcome these obstacles. The Strengthening Families Program is a way to help families expand their skills so that they are more equipped to deal with issues as they arise.
BRiDGES is offering a Strengthening Families Program summer session to help families enhance their skills. The program provides families with an opportunity to come together once a week and enjoy dinner, interacting and learning with one another as well as with other families. The program is an educational program designed to emphasize the strengths families have and build upon new ideas and techniques that will work best for each family. Much of the focus is on building positive and effective communication but families also talk about making house rules, having family meetings, supporting goals and dreams and understanding family values.
The Strengthening Families Program is a research-based program developed by Iowa State University in 1994 and is intended for families with youth between ages of 10-14. The program has been proven successful with many different home situations and with many different ethnic groups and financial situations. BRiDGES has been offering this program to Madison County families since 2004. Since then, the program has run an average of three times per year and to date 75 Madison County families have participated for a total of 269 members of the community.
The next session of the Strengthening Families Program will be held at St. John's Church on Main Street, Oneida. It is going to run on Tuesday evenings starting on July 21 and ending August 25. Each session begins with a dinner served at 5:30 p.m. and the program ends at 8 p.m. The one time cost for families to participate is $20, which covers the entire six-week program, materials, food, and child care for younger siblings. To register your family, please call BRiDGES at 697-3947.
The registration deadline is Thursday July 16.
