New faces at Canton Woods

What would you say to volunteers to get them to spend time at Canton Woods? What duties can volunteers perform?

"To anyone looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity, there are many possibilities. Volunteers contribute in a variety of ways. Volunteers provide clerical support, prepare spaces for changing program needs and facilitate programs," Ruth said. "I would also say consider volunteering with B'ville Express or Baldwinsville Meals on Wheels. Both of these programs operate independently of Canton Woods Senior Center, however, they do operate out of the center."

"I would encourage volunteers to share their interests and talents, to help with outdoor activities and for young people to come and spend time "working" with our seniors. Many of our regulars volunteer their time at special events, but extra help is welcome for many events," Joan added.

Considering the retirement of the former director and the resignation shortly thereafter of the assistant director, how did that impact your transition?

"Both the director and assistant director had been at Canton Woods for several years," Ruth said. "Change is always a challenge, and this situation presented a significant change in a short time. Change also provides opportunity for growth. From the beginning the seniors have been incredibly warm and welcoming. Everyone has been helpful and continue to be patient during the transition. My experience transitioning into the center director position has been very positive."

What does the center offer?

Canton Woods currently offers a wide array of interesting programs from Bingo to Tai Chi. The population that uses the center ranges in age from folks in their 90s to folks in their 50s. The goal is to continue to meet the needs of the current population and plan for the needs and interests of future participants. Canton Woods Senior Center's mission statement provides a focus for planning. The mission remains to offer stimulating social activities, education and recreation programs, nutrition, health and other services, and helping seniors to remain active members of the community.
