Why did you choose this line of work? What is fulfilling about your position?
"As a social work student at Nazareth College, I was required to complete an internship .My internship happened to be at a large health care facility in Rochester. This was a humbling experience, which motivated me to choose a career working with older adults," Ruth said. "The residents were eager to share amazing life stories and managed to maintain positive attitudes despite tremendous losses. The most fulfilling aspect of my position is the opportunity to meet and work with so many interesting people. The senior population is diverse and each person brings their unique set of experiences, talents and ideas. I am excited about partnering with the seniors to build the future of Canton Woods Senior Center."
"The position at Canton Woods became an option," Joan said after she took the civil service test for senior recreational leader. "I went for it and I am very glad I did. It is really fulfilling when the seniors are happy and to know I had a little part in their happiness."
What would you say to seniors to get them to participate in Canton Woods activities?
"I would encourage seniors to come in and have a look around," Joan said. "The people who come regularly to the center are our best advocates. I would encourage [visitors] to meet some of the people here and to check us out and see what we have to offer."
"It only takes a few moments to realize Canton Woods Senior Center does not conform to the stereo type of a senior center. The center is thriving and dynamic, no two days are the same," Ruth said. "An involved, organized senior activity group works with the staff and the Canton Woods Board of Directors to promote the senior's interests and represent their concerns."
