New faces at Canton Woods

Change is in the air.

When Frank Foster announced he would be retiring Dec. 31, then Terri Stamp resigned in April, Canton Woods Senior Center had to hire both a new director and senior recreation leader. Officials found successful candidates in Ruth Troy (the new director, pictured left) and Joan Ferstler (senior recreation leader, pictured right).

A 20-year resident of Baldwinsville, Ruth was appointed to the director position March 23. Originally from East Syracuse, she was employed in a similar role for the town of DeWitt, and later worked for Syracuse Home Association, a facility she said that is dedicated to serving the community's senior population.

Prior to Canton Woods, Joan, who became assistant director June 1, served as the activities director at Sunnyside Care Center. She also holds an associate's degree in human services and is a certified nurse's aide.

The Messenger recently caught up with the two women to see how they are settling in:

What has been the biggest challenge for you thus far?

"Initially, the challenge, as with any new position, was to become acquainted with the people, personalities and daily activity at Canton Woods Senior Center," Ruth said.

"To learn everyone's names and what they do at the center," Joan said.

What do you think of Canton Woods and Baldwinsville?

"Canton Woods is an awesome center," said Joan who is not originally from Baldwinsville. "The people who come here and work here care so much for the center and the people who come here, it is great. I am beginning to find my way around . . . I like that Baldwinsville has so much to offer the people who live around here, and there are so many places seniors can go for fun and assistance."

"Baldwinsville is a special community. I am particularly impressed by the strong sense of community and supportive network among the service agencies and organizations," Ruth said. "Canton Woods is a vital multipurpose senior center, which runs on incredible volunteer time, talent and energy. I am so impressed with the senior's pride in the center and their commitment to its continued success. Baldwinsville is very fortunate to have such a wonderful center. The center has the strong support of the village of Baldwinsville and the towns of Lysander and Van Buren. The three municipalities are clearly committed to Canton Woods and the senior population of Greater Baldwinsville. The center and its participants give back to the community as well."
