A medical mission team from the United Methodist Church in Canastota is headed for Nicaragua Jan. 24 and returning Feb. 1. Local participants are Greg Wright, physician assistant; Oneida Healthcare Center's Dr. Janet McMahon, DO, Oneida Healthcare Center's Sue LaBarre, RN, Oneida Healthcare Center's Dr. James LaBarre, PharmD, and Donna Barrett, RN. This is the third trip for Greg Wright, the second such trip for Sue and James Labarre and the first trip for the others.
During the week in Nicaragua the team will operate at various remote clinics set up in the hill surround Jinotega, Nicaragua. They will bring medical care to the residents who otherwise find it difficult to get medical care. They will also bring clothing.
The mission team also helps support the efforts of Sandy Carter who runs two orphanages and a home for teenaged boys as well as feeding programs in this impoverished country.
The trip is sanctioned by the United Methodists Volunteers in Mission. The United Methodist Church on Center Street will hold a dedication for the trip on Sunday Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. All are invited to attend.
The trip is funded mostly by local donations. Each missionary is responsible for the cost of the trip. Those interested in helping out, donations can be brought or sent to the United Methodist Church, 144 Center St. Canastota, 13032.
Wright is planning to lead a group to Nicaragua in 2010. Planning for that trip will start as soon as he returns to Canastota in February. Wright is willing to talk groups on how they can be part of his 2010 trip.
