Senator John A. DeFrancisco was named Ranking Republican Member of the New York State Senate Finance Committee by Senate Republican Leader Dean G. Skelos Tuesday, Jan. 13.
"I am pleased to announce Senator DeFrancisco's selection as the Ranking Republican Member of the important Senate Finance Committee," Seklos announced. "In these challenging economic times, we will rely on his strong and steady voice on fiscal issues important to our Republican conference and to the people of New York, including the need to reduce State spending, create jobs and provide meaningful property tax relief."
"I am honored that I have been named Ranking Republican Member of the Senate Finance Committee," DeFrancisco said. "This is a very important position in the Senate, especially now, given the fiscal crisis our state is facing. I am anxious and excited to begin working to help do what is needed to remedy our State's financial situation and restore the Empire State. I will work toward the passage of a budget that serves the interests of all New Yorkers."
In this powerful committee, DeFrancisco will play a significant role in reviewing the Governor's proposed budget and developing the Senate Republican Conference's priorities for the State Budget. The Finance Committee will examine appropriations and disbursements for each agency included in the budget.
The Senate Finance Committee is also responsible for reviewing bills or resolutions that provide for an appropriation. In addition, the Finance Committee is responsible for reviewing nominations sent by the Governor for appointments, and moving the nominations to the full Senate.
Legislative budget hearings began Tuesday. DeFrancisco was set to attend budget hearings on Environmental Conservation, Human Services and Higher Education throughout the week.
