Admitting to taking snowmobiles from private property for "joy riding," two teens were arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle.
David J. Vincent, 18, of West Lewis Street and a 14-year-old Tag Road juvenile admitted to Canastota police that they took two snowmobiles from property on Spencer Street, one from Deppoliti Avenue and one on Wilson Avenue in the village. A snowmobile was also reported taken from Tag Road. The State Police handled the Tag Road property theft, according to Chief James Zophy.
Canastota police officers Sean Barton, James Gleasman, William Preuss and William Stevens began investigating stolen snowmobiles when residents reported them missing on or around Dec. 27, 28 and 31.
One Spencer Street property owner was able to track his stolen snowmobile to New Boston Street where it was left because it had broken down.
The two were arrested for petit larceny for taking a part from one of the snowmobiles and four counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle. Vincent also was charged with four counts of acting in a manner that injures a child younger than 17.
Vincent admitted to police that he was look-out for the juvenile while he tried to start the snowmobiles. Once the youth started the snowmobiles, the two would take off.
The two were arraigned and Vincent was sentenced to Madison County Jail with bail at $2,000. The juvenile was placed in the custody of family court.
