Teams team up for cancer research

The high school girls' volleyball teams from Hamilton Central Schools and DeRuyter Central Schools didn't wear their normal uniform jerseys last week. Instead, Hamilton wore dark purple t-shirts and DeRuyter wore lavender ones, but both had the same message: "American Cancer Research" and "Hamilton vs. DeRuyter."

At the door, Hamilton student and field hockey player Liz Pils accepted donations for part of Hamilton's efforts on behalf of Coaches vs. Cancer. Pils said the field hockey team had a similar fund-raiser this past season. She organized Tuesday night's event.

For $1, donors could write the name of a friend or loved one who died or recovered from cancer. The wall outside the gym where the volleyball game was being played had numerous remembrances written on the white paper volleyballs.

At about the time the varsity game started, Pils said she had raised $100.

The t-shirts were donated by Screen It in Hamilton.
