The Madison County Sheriff's Department investigated a personal injury tractor accident that happened in the town of Nelson on Jan. 30.
Deputies responded to the report of a man trapped underneath an upside down tractor in a field several hundred yards behind the man's residence on Eaton Brook Road in the town of Nelson at about 5 p.m.
Joe P. Kaulfers, 53, of 4756 Eaton Brook Road was operating his farm tractor doing logging work in a wooded area. It appears as Kaulfers was operating the tractor on a slight incline when the rear tires stopped turning and the front tires continued to pull the tractor, causing it to flip over backward.
Kaulfers was freed from beneath the tractor by members of the Morrisville and Eaton Fire Departments. He was airlifted to SUNY Health Science Center/Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse by the Onondaga County Sheriff's Aviation Unit/medi-vac helicopter with severe hypothermia, hand and leg injuries.
It is unknown how long he was pinned beneath the overturned tractor.
