St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (SEAS) held their first annual Thanksgiving Holiday CYO basketball tournament Friday Nov. 27 and Saturday Nov. 28.
The SEAS Girls CYO team won the 2009 Holiday Tournament championship by defeating MHR (33-17) on Friday Nov. 27 and St. Joseph's (21-9) on Saturday Nov. 28. The girls played an outstanding championship game with a stifling defense holding St. Joe's to just three points in three quarters. The Most Valuable Players (game balls) for both tournament games were Nicole Carey and Hope DeFazio with the overall Tournament MVP going to Nicole Carey. Honorable mentions go to Katie Walsh and Kaitlyn Andersen for Saturday's game well as well.
The girls are now 6-2 for the season.
The boys' junior high team played Holy Family II in their opening game. They started out slow and fell behind by 15 points. They battled all the way back only to lose in double overtime 52-47. Christian Nizamis and Jeff Schnackle earned game balls for their efforts.
In the tournament consolation game, the boys handily defeated St. Patrick's 53-19. Jeff Schnackel earned All Tournament team honors for his play. The JV team opened up play against Immaculate Heart of Mary and won 43-33. Evan Johnson earned a game ball for his effort. The JV team played Holy Family in the championship final and came up short 42-24. Anthony Sylvester earned All Tournament team honors for his play.
The varsity team played Holy Family in their opening game. The game went into overtime with SEAS emerging on top by the score of 49-40. Shaun Devlin earned a game ball for his effort. In the championship game, the varsity played a very physical St. Patrick's team and played superbly. They won easily 56-29 to claim the championship. Shaun Devlin earned All Tournament team honors for his play.
