Morning crash in Clay claims one life

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a crash that claimed the life of 41-year-old woman.

This morning at approximately 9:18 a.m., Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two-car crash reported on Route 57, just north of Wetzel Road, where a Ford Freestyle was struck by a Mercury Mountaineer.

Witnesses told deputies that the Freestyle was in the southbound lane of Route 57 and crossed into the path of the Mountaineer, which was traveling north on Route 57. Unable to stop the Mountaineer crashed into the rear passenger side of the Freestyle. Impact from the crash forced the Freestyle to spin around before coming to a rest in a culvert on the East Side of Route 57.

The operator of the Freestyle was pronounced dead on the scene, while the passenger was transported to University Hospital. The driver of the Mountaineer also sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital.

Additional information including the names of those involved in the incident will be released once family notifications have been made. Members of the Sheriff's Accidents Investigation are currently attempting to determine why the Freestyle crossed into the SUV's path.
