Looking for a walking buddy? Why not try the YMCA's Folksmarch?According to the downtown Y a Folksmarch is a non-competitive walking event . Here in CNY it is conducted monthly for people of all ages and abilities. The YMCA of Greater Syracuse started Folksmarching 27 years ago in Oct. 1981. It has not missed a month since. But still why? Essentially people walk for fellowship or exercise or just to get some fresh air. It's not competitive, you walk at your own pace.
This month the walk will start at the downtown Y's (340 Montgomery St.) Writer's Center on either Friday Dec. 11 anytime between 1:30 and 6 p.m. or Saturday Dec. 12 between 8:30 and 11 a.m.
There is an event fee for non Y members of $3.50 adults; $1 youth 16 and under, although first timers are free.
The route distances are a choice of either 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles). Routes vary at each location, but normally include a combination of paved walkways and natural settings. Routes are marked and a map is provided to each walker. A shorter modified route is always available to those who choose not to walk the longer distances. The January Folksmarchh is on the 9th and 10th at Oneida Shores County Park (Arrowhead Lodge).
