Bringing back a longstanding and popular Central New York holiday tradition, Syracuse's Dunbar Association will present "Jazz Christmas 2009" at 7:30 p.m.on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Eastwood's 800-seat Palace Theater, located at 2384 James St. The popular holiday concert event, formerly presented annually by Syracuse Jazz Fest, is being produced by Dunbar, in association with Jazz Fest and Syracuse jazz radio station WAER-FM, and will be highlighted by a concert program of Christmas favorites and Holiday standards by Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Freddy Cole and His Quartet.
Dunbar Association, Inc., located at 1453 South State Street on Syracuse's South Side, has been in operation continuously since 1918 and currently operates 11 programs for area residents, providing services for seniors, youths and families, ranging in age from infants to seniors. All proceeds from this Dec. 19 Dunbar fund raiser will be used to support critical community programs.
Atlanta-based Freddy Cole, world-renowned jazz vocalist and pianist, is the youngest brother of the celebrated Nat "King" Cole, uncle to popular songstress Natalie Cole, and known for his smoky baritone and swinging style. In a recent review, the New York Times said "Freddy has an impeccable sense of swing...he is, overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive."
