Families, booster clubs, sports teammates and anyone else can sign up to see who can finish first. Sell said the idea was spawned from the Onondaga County Firemen's Convention, only this is a little less intense -- in that the participants won't have to climb a ladder with a full bucket of water.
No matter how it's being done, though, it's something new and fun, Sell said.
While the weekend's events are all about having fun and relaxing before fall sets in, there is more to it. The Firemen's Field Days is the single biggest fundraiser for the volunteer fire department -- and the money raised goes toward equipment purchases, Buff said.
"This money we raise goes toward apparatus replacement so we don't have to ask the taxpayers," Sell said, emphasizing that the department raises money through this fundraiser so they don't have to raise taxes to cover costs for equipment.
Also, Skaneateles' fire tax is one of the lowest in Onondaga County, Sell said.
"That's something we're very proud of," he said.
As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all donations made to the Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Department at tax deductible. As a volunteer organization, the firefighters are always looking for additional members to join the ranks, which include joining as a firefighter, an auxiliary member and several other duties.
Anyone interested in learning more about membership into the department can speak to any Skaneateles firefighter, and this weekend there will be plenty of them around to talk to.
