Village of Canastota Board members hosted an informational meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 26 at the municipal building to discuss a preliminary recreational park design that the board acquired through a contract with Elan Planning and Design. Canastota Mayor Todd Rouse said that the idea for a new recreational park has always been in discussion because of the demand for more playing fields among several athletic and activity groups including the AYSO, Optimists Club and Pop Warner leagues, to name a few.
The board has been looking at the 20-plus acre lot adjacent to the Canastota Business Park for the proposed project. All plans are still in discussion and no further plans will be made until the board is certain the park is needed and that funding can be acquired through grants and other fundraising, Rouse said.
"We still need to evaluate this and see if it's actually feasible," Rouse said. "If it has merit, we will involve residents and taxpayers in further discussion."
Rouse said that if the plans move forward, the board will create a committee for the project comprised of a variety of residents to have a broad overview of the benefits of the park to all village taxpayers.
