Matt Funiciello, a high school Senior at CW Baker High School, has volunteered at the Samaritan Center with his family on several occasions. He was impressed with the mission of the Center and so, when the idea of organizing a doubles tennis tournament occurred to him, he decided to make the tournament a fundraiser for the Center.
Fifty-eight tennis players from Ithaca to Pulaski gathered at Matt's Baldwinsville home in mid-July to compete in seven divisions. A family affair, Matt's father, John Funiciello, provided the trophies for the winners in each division and arranged for Frank's Franks to cater the event. Covering all bases, Matt worked with Chris Galle, the head tennis pro at Golds Gym. The Gym held three courts open for three days so that the tournament could proceed if there were inclement weather. The tournament ran for three days and at the end, it was, for all concerned, a resounding success.
Matt, who plans to major in business at an as yet un-chosen college, was so pleased with the results of the event that he is planning another.
"I loved organizing the event, playing in the event and most important raising money for a great cause," he said.
