Abbott is 6th grade DMS math champ

Michael Abbott is a DMS School math league champion

Congratulations go out to the 98 sixth grade students participated in the annual Sixth Grade New York State Mathematics League Contest during the spring semester of the 2008-09 school year. Students were given 30 minutes to complete 40 challenging math problems. Because of the high level of difficulty, a score of 15 is considered commendable. Very few students who take the exam throughout the state receive a score as high as 30. The following is an example of one of the more challenging problems that students were asked to solve:

If I write all 26 letters of the English alphabet in alphabetical order 62 times in a row, then the 806th letter I write will be

A)A B) E C) V D) Z

The top five scores were sent in to represent C. S. Driver Middle School in the state contest. The following students earned that honor:

Tied for the fourth-highest score of 25 are Michael Clark, Alex Dunn, Dylan Felty, Claire Hammerschmidt, Zoe Higgins, Ian LeFever, and Mary Morocco.

The third place winner, with an excellent score of 26, is Sean King.

The second place winner, who scored an impressive 27, is Brad Kaler.

The sixth grade Math League Contest winner is Michael Abbott. Michael had an outstanding score of 29.

A number of other students scored 20 or higher. They are: Rebecca Mullins, Allie Ghezzi, Jeff Beyel, Genna Rao, Will Coon, Kelsey Rodriguez Doran, Alec Bonk, Matt Gooden, Annabelle Vanderwerf, Dan Tierney, Colleen Ferguson, Craig Dorio, Colin Smith, Joey Sacco, Nellie Ramsden, Adam Molinari, Jackie Madden, Rachel Ceparski, Trevor Parker, Corey Palmer, Michael Cherchio, Bryan Carroll, Colleen Condon, and Erica Ylitalo.

Out of nine counties in Central and Northern New York including, Cayuga, Clinton, Cortland, Franklin, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Saint Lawrence, and Tompkins, the sixth grade team from Driver Middle School took third place honors.

Congratulations to the students with the top scores and to all who participated for their outstanding efforts!
