NOPL: A whole new day

A Whole New Day

The NOPL library @North Syracuse is about to add to the hours it is open. The Monday--Saturday hours will remain unchanged (M-Th 9a-8p; F 9a-5p; Sa 9a-3p), but starting on September 13, introduced with an outdoor performance by Soda Ash Six, the library will become open on Sundays from 12-5pm.

The School Supply Drive

There's still time to donate new school supplies to be distributed by our local food pantries during NOPL's annual Great Start drive. Items are being collected at the Brewerton, Cicero, and North Syracuse libraries, and will be accepted through the end of August.

New Titles for These Uncertain Times

We're hearing now that the US economy might be emerging from this Great Recession, and that global economic activity appears to be "leveling out" as Ben Bernanke said on Friday (8/21). If this is true, let's hope that the unemployment rate follows suit--those who have been hunting for jobs are still, by and large, hunting, although the most recent statistics from the New York Department of Labor report a .1% decrease in the unemployment rate (from June to July 2009, after seasonal adjustment). NOPL has collected the following new titles in hopes of offering assistance to job seekers and career changers in these challenging times.

"150 Best Recession-Proof Jobs" by Laurence Shatkin (JIST Works, (c)2009) contains detailed descriptions and rankings of the best recession-proof jobs. There are also rankings by pay, job growth, number of openings, education and more.

"100 Fastest-Growing Careers: Your Complete Guidebook to Major Jobs with the Most Growth and Openings" by Michael Farr (JIST Works, (c)2009) also contains career descriptions. These are careers expected to have the highest percentage of growth and the most annual openings through 2016.

"Strategies for Successful Career Change: Finding Your Very Best Next Work Life" by Martha E. Mangelsdorf (Ten Speed Press, (c)2009). If you're looking for a more fulfilling career or your career goals have changed after a layoff, this book can help you make the transition to a new career. It contains practical advice, exercises and inspirational stories from successful career changers.
