The Cazenovia Minor League All-Star Team beat Fabius 15-3 in the Championship Game of the Diamond Pioneer Baseball League on Aug. 1.
Cazenovia pitching was led by brothers Burke and Matt Regan who combined for four shutout innings, while Isaac Steves struck out four batters in two innings.
Cazenovia never looked back as the Lakers took a 6-0 lead after the first inning led by Ryan Misture's first-inning double and Will Kemitz's bases-loaded triple. Alex Nannery, Josh Bauder, Will Shepard and Judd Spaulding led the scoring with two runs each, while Jack Gabor, playing with a bruised left forearm, scored one run.
The championship game capped a magical 10-0 undefeated season where Cazenovia beat its opponents consistently by double digits. Cazenovia's closest game of the season came at the hands of Fabius, which Caz won 8-0.
The Laker pitching staff, which was led by Burke and Matt Regan, Isaac Steves, Alex Nannery, Tom Bragg and Will Shepard, was phenomenal all season. Although few teams could hit the Laker pitching, the offense was just as impressive. Cazenovia scored an average of 15 runs per game, while holding its opponents to an average of three runs per game.
Defensively Cazenovia as impressive as well. One of the team's goals was to turn a legitimate groundball double play in the infield. The Lakers accomplished that goal against DeRuyter when a groundball was fielded by shortstop Burke Regan, who then threw to second baseman Isaac Steves for the force out, who then threw a strike to an outstretched first baseman Dustin Hammond for the double play. The following game against Fabius, Cazenovia turned a rare triple play.
The Laker team would like to thank the Cazenovia Baseball Association for this opportunity to compete against other towns, as well as the coaches and parents.
Adam Washbon also deserves special praise. He helped contribute to the success of this team, on the field as well as off the field. Adam's knowledge of the game, and commitment to Cazenovia baseball, is held in high regard.
