Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has selected Arthur P. Vercillo, M.D., as its new regional president of the company's Central New York region. Vercillo replaces James R. Reed, who was recently promoted to senior vice president of marketing and sales. Vercillo assumes his new position immediately.
As regional president, Vercillo will be responsible for developing and maintaining quality health care provider networks and supporting the growth and retention of business in Central New York.
"Dr. Vercillo's experience as vice president and chief medical officer of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, manager of his own medical practice, and a local surgeon with more than two decades of service in Central New York provide him with a unique understanding of our business and the community's needs," said Christopher Booth, executive vice president, commercial markets and health care affairs, Excellus BCBS.
Vercillo joined Excellus BCBS as a medical director in 2004 and was promoted to vice president and chief medical officer of the Central New York and Utica regions in 2006.
He earned his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center, Syracuse, and undergraduate degree from Syracuse University. Vercillo completed his internship and residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Hartford, Conn., and he was a surgical research fellow at Harvard University, Boston. A practicing surgeon, he is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an assistant professor of general surgery and otolaryngology at SUNY Upstate Medical University and is a past president of the Onondaga County Medical Society.
He and his wife live in Fayetteville and have three grown children.
