Van Buren offering boater safety course

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's about boater safety course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday May 23 at the Van Buren Town Hall. The program is available to those ages 10 and older and is aimed at training the public on the subject of safety on the water. This will be taught as a one-day course, covering material to educate boaters in all safe-boating practices. Upon successful completion, participants will receive certification needed to comply with jet-ski regulations in effect as of Jan. 1, 2004. Participants must pass an exam to receive their certification.

Advance registration is a must, and the fee for this program is $35 for one participant, which includes the study guide, and $25 for a second participant (spouse, family member, etc.) who can share the study guide. Fishing derby

The Van Buren Parks and Recreation department will host the annual fishing derby for children (ages 4 to 16) from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday May 9, rain or shine. Prizes will be given for longest fish in two different age categories. A casting contest will be run as well, open to all attending the derby. Bring your own reels, bait, tackle, buckets, etc. A concession stand will also be open at the lodge before, during and after the fishing contest. Food and beverages will include coffee, juice, nachos, hot dogs and more.

The Cortland Line Company, Eagle Claw and Laker Fishing Tackle Co. are some of the major sponsors of this event. The Clay Wal-Mart and the Bass Pro Shop in Auburn are also helping out with donations and prizes. Although there is no fee for the fishing derby, advanced registration is a must. Contact the Van Buren Parks and Recreation Department at 638-4727 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
