Style-maker Thom Filicia raises money for cancer research

Dedicates new book, "Thom Felicia Style," to one-of-a-kind-mom, Janet Katherine Felicia:

Skaneateles' Thom Filicia was busy in California shooting his television show "Dress My Nest"(airs Wednesdays at 11 p.m. on the Style Network), yet he took my call. That's Thom, approachable, a thinker and very funny. After nearly an hour we hung up. My 13 year old son heard the phone hit the cradle and declared "mom, you hung up! I wanted to talk to that guy!" That is Thom Filicia in a nutshell. He is a guy you want to talk to.

Talk about energy. Filicia is the recipient of an Emmy for his work on "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." He was named as one of House Beautiful's Top 100 American Designers. He has his own design company, Thom Filicia, Inc., where he designs for the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. His list of accolades goes on and on but what I enjoyed most about speaking with Filicia was his need to stay true to who he is and where he came from.

Strong family connection; dealing with cancer

He began life in the Sedgwick area of Syracuse and now makes his home in Skaneateles. He studied interior design at Syracuse University. He credits an interest in design that he was born with and his family for supporting those interests for any success he has found and enjoyed in his life.

"How well I do the things I do has a lot to do with how well my parents and siblings supported my interests," Felicia said. "I have a brother who is a creative director at an advertising agency, another brother who is an attorney, a father who is an engineer and a mother who was at once, creative, theatrical, entertaining and hilarious!"

The book that Filicia recently published, "Thom Filicia Style," is dedicated to his "one-of-a-kind mom," Janet Katherine Felicia (1939-2002). He lost his mother to breast cancer.
