Man critical in hit-and-run

Canastota Police Department say a 51-year-old Uniondale man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle during an altercation in the village Saturday. Police continue to investigate the hit-and-run accident that occurred at about 3 a.m. April 18.

Mitchell Nieves, 51, of 241 Fenimore Ave., Uniondale, was involved in a multi-person altercation on Park Street in the village, police say. During the altercation, Nieves was struck and critically injured by a vehicle driven by Anthony J. Bornschein, 28, of 1974 N. Petty Lane, Clearwater, Fla.

Nieves was transported by Greater Lenox Ambulance Service to Upstate Medical Center. Police say he is in critical condition.

According to police, Bornschein fled the scene but was apprehended minutes later on Canal Road by Oneida City Police. He was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury automobile accident, a class A misdemeanor, and released.
