Younger children tagging along to softball games at Burton Street Park will have a new place to play this summer.
"I wanted to do something that was visible -- something that was going to be recognized and used by the whole community," Rotary member Anna Marie Neuland said.
Neuland led the initiative through Rotary to install a small playground adjacent to the basketball court at the park after she saw her grandchildren and other children who didn't have a set location to play while their other siblings played softball or basketball.
The village board approved the park at an April 6 meeting. The playground is being donated to the village by Rotary, who used funds from their annual local phone book advertising sales to purchase the playground.
The playground was originally expected to cost about $12,000, but an additional $5,000 in unexpected costs is now being funded by advertising sales for Rotary's upcoming phone book.
Rotary will need help installing the playground -- volunteers can call Anna Marie Neuland at 655-9182 and leave their contact information if they would like to help with the installation in early May.
The village has also offered assistance.
Those interested in advertising in the Rotary Phone Book can contact Wendy Taylor at 655-8920 or Anna Marie Neuland at 655-9182.
The playground is being purchased from Miracle Recreation Equipment Company. The playground in Lakeland Park in Cazenovia is from the same company.
