B'ville junior wins laptop

Carl Miller, a junior at Baker High School, has been awarded a new laptop from USAGraduate.com, an innovative online competition designed to educate and excite students in fourth through 12th grades about science, technology, engineering and math.

The program features three separate weekly online quizzes for seven weeks for elementary, middle and high school students in New York State. Miller is one of 100 students in the state to be awarded a prize based on the cumulative number of points earned on the quizzes. The competition is modeled after a successful program developed in Ireland that promotes civic awareness among students.

USAGraduate.com began last year as a pilot program with the Syracuse City School District and was expanded this year to districts in Central New York, the capital region and downstate. According to Mat Zlomek, project manager for USAGraduate.com, the program will eventually be offered nationwide.
