Having endured seven consecutive defeats to open the season, the Skaneateles girls basketball team finally earned a spot in the win column. During Tuesday’s opening round of the Wayne Tournament, the Lakers would make a spirited fourth-quarter comeback and beat the hosts from Wayne by a score of 42-37. All looked to be good at the start, when Skaneateles seized a 13-5 lead in the first quarter. But Wayne regrouped and, by the third quarter, put together its own 15-3 spurt that left the Lakers staring at a 29-22 deficit. Not blinking, though, the Lakers would dominate in those last eight minutes, going on a 20-8 run to move back in front for good. Emily Call led the winning effort, recording 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Jackie Leslie also connected twice beyond the arc on her way to seven points, while Ashley Sheldon and Holly Ross got six points apiece. In the finals one night later, Skaneateles lost to Webster Thomas 54-34, watching as Thomas seized a 16-5 first-quarter lead and never got caught. Sheldon, with 10 points, led the Lakers as Call added seven points.
