A trio of local basketball teams continued strong early-season pushes with one-sided wins on Friday night. Jamesville-DeWitt’s boys team, sitting atop the state Class A rankings, toyed with Homer in an 84-24, with the girls Red Rams prevailing 46-25. Also, the Bishop Grimes boys team moved to 5-0 by bashing Jordan-Elbridge 86-46. J-D’s boys had not been seriously pushed in any of its first four December outings, and Homer continued the trend as it raced to a 45-12 lead by halftime and used everyone on the roster. Twelve of the 13 players that saw action got at least one field goal, as Lamar Kearse earned 17 points and Dajuan Coleman got 14 points. Demetrius Mitchell and Josh Stone earned nine points apiece. As this went on, J-D’s girls team moved to 6-1 and earned its fifth straight OHSL Freedom division win by holding Homer to a scant 12 points in the first three periods. A 15-4 second-quarter spurt broke the game open. Jessica Kramer stood out, earning 16 points. Theresa Hernandez got seven points, while Nicole Ortega got six points. J-D won big even though Alyssa Gratien went without a field goal for the night. Bishop Grimes’ fifth straight win against J-E was settled quite early. A first-quarter blitz saw the Cobras roar out to a 32-9 lead, and the margin grew to 76-29 by the end of the third period. Mike Stone led the way again, earning 21 points, while Tavon Moore and Kucjok Ater had 13 points apiece. Evan Pitonzo had eight points, with Casey Olszewski (seven points) and Casey Evans (six points) also productive. As Grimes prepares for a big game Wednesday at Marcellus, both J-D teams head to a long break – 18 days, to be precise – before their seasons resume Jan. 5 with twin games against Mexico.
