As a change of pace, the Skaneateles boys basketball team decided to do its best work at the start of the game – and not wait for the end – when it visited Solvay Friday night. The result was a first-quarter blitz that put the Bearcats in a hole it could not climb out of as the Lakers rolled to a 68-49 victory and improved its record to 5-1. Just two days removed from a fourth-quarter comeback win at Westhill, and a week removed from the Marcellus rally, Skaneateles did not have any letdown against 1-3 Solvay. instead, with Kevin Rice setting a ferocious pace, the Lakers toyed with the Bearcats and, by the end of the first quarter, enjoyed a 26-6 advantage. Solvay found its offense in the second quarter and cut the lead to 39-29, by the break. But Skaneateles never lost control and gradually pulled away in the second half. Rice led both sides with 22 points. Pat Roberts had 11 points, while Kyle McQuiggan came up with nine points. Paul O’Donnell (eight points) and Tom Schoener (six points) were close behind. Dan Aiello led Solvay with 13 points. Back in Skaneateles, the girls Lakers, in pursuit of its first win of the season, was tied with Solvay going into the fourth quarter before taking a 37-34 loss to the Bearcats. The Lakers trailed 21-17 at halftime, but made a third-quarter push and forced a 27-27 deadlock. However, Skaneateles only managed seven points in the final period, which was not enough. Emily Call led the Lakers with 15 points, while Jackie Leslie got eight points. For Solvay, Tessa Pucello got 14 points and Amanda Bigness added 12 points. Both Skaneateles teams play Cazenovia before the holiday break – the girls on Tuesday, the boys on Wednesday night.
