All is going well for the Marcellus basketball program, as both the boys and girls teams emerged from Friday night with impressive wins over Cazenovia. At home, the girls Mustangs improved to 5-1 on the season by knocking off the defending Section III Class B champion Lakers 61-51. Meanwhile, at cozy, cramped Buckley Gym, the Marcellus boys team played a superb second half to get away from Cazenovia and earn a 63-40 win. As the Marcellus girls team grew up in the off-season, Cazenovia had to deal with the loss of many key players, including its two best defenders in Kiley Evans and Kassie Kleine, leading to a 2-2 start. Sensing all this, the Mustangs tore right through the Laker resistance in the first quarter and claimed a 19-10 lead, a margin that generally held for the rest of the half. Needing more of a cushion, Marcellus got it by holding Cazenovia to just six points in the third quarter while extending its lead to 47-31. Cazenovia would not catch up. Four different Mustangs scored in double figures. Christa Rockburn led with 14 points, while Melissa Lee got 12 points. Marie Temara and Megan Tock each had 11 points, with Emily Brisette adding eight points. Cazenovia lost depite getting three players – Ellen Burr (12 points), Ashley Stec (11 points) and Raeanne Clabeaux (10 points) in double figures. With the Marcellus boys team, a week removed from its bitter Dec. 11 defeat to Skaneaeles, it took some time to get away from those other Lakers from Cazenovia. In fact, the Mustangs only led 24-21 at halftime, but nearly doubled its output by outscoring the Lakers 21-12 in the third period. This double-digit lead would not go away, either, thanks to an 18-7 finish. Will Fiacchi had 18 points, while Steve Raven’s 12 points included a pair of 3-pointers and Luke McNaney also got 12 points. Niko Wagner added eight points. The Mustangs could move to the top of the OHSL Liberty division if its knocks off unbeaten BIshop Grimes Wednesday night. Marcellus owns its own holiday tournament on Dec. 28 and 29, just as the girls Mustangs go to a tournament at Fulton.
