Once again proving successful in the CNY Counties League National division, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team defended its home mat Wednesday night with a 39-25 victory over Rome Free Academy. The Northstars (3-1), second behind Baldwinsville in the league standings, took charge early in the meet as, in back-to-back matches, James Segars (152 pounds) pinned DeVante Marshall in 2:46 and Todd Hagger (160 pounds) got a pin over Gil Torres in 1:13. Though the Black Knights won two of the next three matches, Ariel Anocedo sneaked in at 189 pounds and pinnned Matt Leggett in 1:39. And right after Heather Kubacki (103 pounds) claimed a forfeit, Dan Cicciarelli earned three crucial points at 112 pounds, holding on to beat Tyler Christman 9-8. CNS did not clinch the meet until the late stages, where Alex Barry took a forfeit at 130 pounds and Patrick Dyer, at 135 pounds, got a pin over Josh Knapp at the end of the second period. Kiel Dyer (140 pounds) fell to Jeff Brown 5-2. Liverpool also wrestled on Wednesday night — but the Warriors found less success at Central Square, taking a 44-21 loss to the Red Hawks. Central Square won every match from 119 to 152 pounds, seven in all, to account for most of its winning margin. Only Nate Hathaway (125 pounds) came close to breaking that string in a 7-5 defeat to James Williams. Liverpool did get three pins in the higher weight classes, all in the first period. Mike Reed, at 215 pounds, took 1:16 to finish off Tyler Winn, while Joe Pizzuto (171 pounds) got a fall over Steve Guerin in 1:21 and Derek Eason (160 pounds) pinned Garret Claffey in 1:26. At 112 pounds, Casey Guilfoil edged Ryan Lamson 4-2. The Central Square meet followed Liverpool’s solid effort in the inaugural Herkimer Tournament on Dec. 12, where it was seventh in a 19-team field with 83 points. Sherburne-Earlville (148 points) edged Mohawk (138 points) for the top spot. Tyler Eason reached the 119-pound championship match. He beat Brad Phelps (Chittenango) 16-6 in the quarterifnals and topped Alex Potts (Onondaga) 9-4 in the semifinals. In a close final, Eason fell to CBA/J-D’s J.T. Romagnoli in a 6-5 decision. Elsewhere, Derek Eason claimed third place at 152 pounds, pinning Colton Dye (Mount Markham) midway through the third period of their consolation match. Reed beat Brandon Stevens 7-5 for third place at 215 pounds, while Pizzuto, at 171 pounds, worked his way to fourth place.
