Liverpool’s basketball teams had outings against Oswego Tuesday night, with wildly varying results. On the boys end, the Warriors improved to 4-1, catching Oswego at a perfect time and taking over down the stretch in a 69-39 win over the Buccaneers. Oswego had played the day before, in the finals of the Fulton Savings Bank Tournament (a 75-68 loss to Cicero-North Syracuse), so the fact that it hung as close as it did with the well-rested Warriors was admirable. Fresh off its own overtime conquest of Henninger on Dec. 11, Liverpool found the Bucs to be stubborn in the first half, as the two sides went to the break in a 24-24 tie. Gradually, though, the Warriors’ pressure, combined with fresher legs, began to tell, as it took a comfortable lead in the third quarter and closed on a 25-4 run. Jesse Gates led Liverpool with 19 points, as 11 different players picked up field goals. Richard Green had 10 points, while Adam Misener got eight points. Ian Hamm (seven points) and Connor Rogers (six points) had modest showings. Up in Oswego, the Liverpool girls basketball team could not recover from a poor first half in a 43-25 loss to the Bucs. As if Oswego’s 18-8 start was not discouraging enough, the Warriors managed just a single field goal in the second period as the deficit grew to 31-10. Nina Tassone would get most of her nine points in the second half, all of which came from a trio of successful 3-point shots. Oswego featured Michelle Canale, who had 12 points, and Lindsay Johnson, who added 11 points.
