In a space of two days, three local girls basketball teams all won against OHSL Freedom division opponents. It started last Monday night with Christian Brothers Academy, at full strength, jumping all over Homer in a 70-29 romp of the Trojans to stay unbeaten. When the Brothers had last played (a win over East Syracuse-Minoa on Dec. 8), Leanne Ockenden had left the game in the third quarter with a slight knee injury, and there was some concern over whether the injury was serious. But Ockenden was on the court against Homer — and so were her teammates, unleashing a near-flawless start where it forced a rash of Trojan turnovers, leading to easy baskets and a 28-2 margin at the end of the first quarter. CBA could not keep that up in the game’s middle stages, but maintained its healthy margin and closed on an 18-6 run even after the starters rested. Ockenden finished with 16 points, while Kelsey Johnson earned 10 points. Marisa Romeo (nine points), Michelle Damico (eight points), Katie Webster (seven points) and Michelle Wiese (six points) all had solid showings, too. Jamesville-DeWitt was back on Tuesday, still high off the Alyssa Gratien buzzer-beater that produced a win over ESM on Dec. 10. Going to Fulton, the Red Rams received a stout test, but still beat the Red Raiders 52-46 to stay unbeaten (4-0) in league play and move to 5-1 overall. After claiming a 19-14 first-quarter lead, J-D went cold in the second quarter, managing just three points. However, Fulton couldn’t capitalize, and the Rams clung to a 22-21 halftime edge. The break seemed to revitalize J-D, who started finding the basket with regularity again in the third quarter, matching every Red Raiders run the rest of the way. Gratien led the Rams with 15 points. Theresa Hernandez, with 10 points, also hit double figures as Caitlin Cariseo earned eight points and Nicole Ortega got seven points. Fulton saw Ashley Palmitesso earn 16 points and Alicia Vann add 13 points. ESM, meanwhile, ended its skid with a 78-23 romp over Fowler, settling matters early with a 26-2 blitz through the first quarter. To back that up, ESM outscored the Falcons 22-3 during the third quarter. Olivia Luciani set a career mark with 21 points, nearly matching Fowler by herself as she hit on four 3-pointers. Becky Teschler had 13 points, while Arnela Mesic, Chelsea Medler and Mallory Buckley picked up 10 points apiece. ESM improved to 2-3 on the season.
