Though it was far from a smooth affair, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team did not mind getting even with West Genesee. Just 12 days after losing to those same Wildcats at home, the Bees went to Camillus last Tuesday night and held on for a 39-36 victory (its third in a row) by mostly relying on a first-rate defense. The first meeting, on Dec. 3, had seen West Genesee rally from a second-half deficit to beat B’ville 50-46. That good memory served the Wildcats at the start of the rematch, as it roared ahead 9-2 before the Bees could settle down. By turning up various kinds of defensive pressure, the Bees had erased the deficit by the second quarter and pulled out in front, 24-19, by halftime. As usual, Maggie and Claire Monnat led the way on offense, as Maggie finished with 13 points and Claire got 12 points. Only once did WG get the lead back — 29-28, late in the third quarter. But Megan Collins’ basket a minute later pushed the Bees ahead for good, and it would spend the rest of the game trying to hang on. B’ville’s deficit got cut to two, but after Gabby Datellas hit on a jumper with 3:09 left, the Bees blanked the Wildcats the rest of the way, its pressure forcing a series of turnovers, including two of them in the final 30 seconds. Maggie Monnat hit a free throw with two seconds left to seal it. Deanna Apps, in defeat, led WG with 13 points.
