Baldwinsville’s boys basketball team seemed to have a lot of work to do following back-to-back defeats in the Fulton Savings Bank Tournament where it served as host — but didn’t get much time to work on them. Instead of practice, though, the Bees found itself on its home court again 24 hours later, making an improbable second-half comeback against West Genesee before it all fell apart in the overtime of an 87-71 loss to the Wildcats. Throughout the game’s first 2 1/2 quarters, B’ville found itself getting pushed around. West Genesee, despite its modest 1-2 record, was controlling all phases of the game, leaving the Bees in a 47-27 hole three minutes into the third period. All of a sudden, the alarm went off — and the Bees closed the third quarter on a 16-6 run, converting numerous turnovers into baskets on the other end and cutting the Wildcats’ lead in half, to 53-43. WG appeared to settle down early in the fourth quarter, going back in front 67-59, but B’ville was far from finished. Starting with Kevin Roy’s jump shot, the Bees put in eight straight points, including Mike Guinta’s back-to-back shots and free throws from Roy that made it 65-65. Even when Connor Herrington’s free throws made it 67-65 in WG’s favor, the Bees had an answer, thanks to Roy’s steal that set up Chris Thayer’s basket. So they would go to overtime 67-67, and it appeared that B’ville had both the momentum and the emotional advantage. Neither held up, though. With six unanswered points from Brian Burns and Tyler Carr, WG went back in front, and when the Bees protested a foul call with 1:27 left, it got hit with two technical fouls. The ensuing five free throws all but settled matters. In defeat, Guinta had 21 points, while Roy earned 14 points and Chris Whalen got 13 points. Nick Alenciewicz (nine points) and Thayer (seven points) offered the support. WG saw Nick Wood set a career mark with 25 points as Burns (15 points), Carr (13 points) and Colin Monroe (12 points) also hit double figures. B’ville lost to Oswego 63-59 in the opening round of the Fulton Savings Bank Tournament on Dec. 1, then saw a poor third quarter prove costly in the consolation game, a 58-48 defeat to Central Square. The Bees led through much of the first half, and took a 26-24 advantage to the break. All that changed, though, when the Red Hawks applied defensive pressure and limited B’ville to just five points in the third period. Throughout the fourth quarter, turnovers and cold shooting prevented any comeback. Roy and Whelan each had nine points, while Guinta got eight points. Asher Bitz and Alenciewicz earned seven points apiece. Anthony Williams led Central Square with 21 points. Cicero-North Syracuse beat Oswego 75-68 in the championship game.
