In all the time it has spent at home in the first three weeks of the season, the West Genesee ice hockey team has proven close to unstoppable, not allowing a single goal to any Section III foe. Yet when the Wildcats took its traditional mid-December venture to the north country last weekend, it did so with some hunger to improve upon its shaky win in its own Dec. 3-4 tournament, where Saratoga Springs and Fairport both put scares into the local favorites. Those games did WG a short-term favor, as evidence by last Tuesday night’s 10-0 destruction of Cicero-North Syracuse at Shove Park. Displaying relentless offensive pressure, WG all but camped out in the Northstars’ end of the ice, recording 62 shots and scoring at least three times in each period on its way to double digits. Zach Lewis earned four of those goals, while Nick Holzhauer earned the first three-goal hat trick of his Wildcat career. Erich Haney had four assists to go with his lone tally, while Adam King got a goal and two assists. Seamus Shanley put in a goal, too, as Shawn Lynch got three assists and Tim Bubnack two assists. Matt Skrupa and Erik Kurz earned assists, too. Now the Wildcats took its show to the far northern reaches of the state, and did the same kind of damage to both of its opponents in last weekend’s Massena Tournament. WG first blasted Saranac 9-0 in Friday night’s opening round, scoring five times in the first period to erase any concerns that the long bus trip would lead to early rust. Haney, with a three-goal hat trick plus an assist, led an attack where seven different players scored. Lewis, Lynch, Holzhauer and Rob Michel each had one goal and two assists, while King got one goal and one assist and Schattner scored, too. Saturday’s final matched WG against Massena, the team that knocked off the Wildcats in an overtime epic in the 2008 state finals in Utica. Perhaps still remembering that outcome, the Wildcats tore through Massena 6-0, its fifth shutout in seven outings. A 1-0 lead broke open when WG got a trio of goals in the second period as the defense held Massena to just six shots. Lewis took his turn with a three-goal hat trick, while Holzhauer, Kurz and Josh Duquette scored, too. King, Lynch, Bubnack, Schattner, Ryan Michel, John Sabert and Seamus Shanley all had spots in the assist column. Solvay would get a split of the week’s action in Division II West. The Bearcats visited long-time rival Skaneateles last Wednesday night and took a 7-3 loss to the Lakers. This game was close for a while. Carmen Birenza scored twice, both off feeds from Mark Syron, who recorded the other goal as Solvay was within one, 4-3, through two periods. Despite this, and despite Ryan Bonk’s 28 saves, the Bearcats watched Skaneateles draw clear with a trio of unanswered goals in the third period. Packy Jones hurt Solvay the most, finishing with three goals and two assists. Other than a trip to Cortland/Homer this week, the Bearcats are off, while WG plays Liverpool at State Fair Coliseum and hosts Potsdam.
