Claiming a 3-0 start, the Westhill boys basketball team hosted Solvay last Saturday and, for the most part, used a big second quarter as the foundation for a 64-49 victory over the Bearcats. Solvay hadn’t won yet in two outings, so the task for the Warriors appeared simple enough. But the Bearcats, with full knowledge of what Westhill would try, did play on even terms through much of the game, matching baskets and doing a solid job on defense. That lone exception came in the second period, when Westhill found the basket with regularity and doubled Solvay’s output, 20-10, to seize a 32-20 halftime edge. From there, the Warriors nursed the margin the rest of the way with a near-perfect offensive balance. Nate Nigolian led with 14 points, but Mike McMullen and Dan Karleski were close behind, getting 13 points apiece, while Dan Ross contributed 11 points. Solvay, for its part, saw Dan Aiello lead both sides with 15 points. T.J. Fazio had nine points, as Chuck St. Andrew and R.J. Lostumbo earned eight points apiece. When the Warriors went to Phoenix last Tuesday night, it got a chance to showcase some of its offense as it breezed past the Firebirds 74-42. Westhill outscored Phoenix in every quarter, maintaining a steady pace of baskets and never getting less than 17 points in any single period as all nine players that saw action got at least one field goal. Ross led the charge, with 23 points, while Alcaro and Justin Biles stepped up, each of them pouring in 12 points. All of Biles’ points came from four 3-pointers as the team finished with 10 treys on the night. McMullen added six points. Solvay had played Wednesday night, but lost to Marcellus 84-52. Try as it could, the Bearcats could not keep up with a furious Mustang pace as the visitors bolted to a 69-36 lead through three periods. Aiello still finished with 19 points, while Lostumbo got 10 points. John Savo (nine points) and Fazio (seven points) were close behind. All of them had trouble with Marcellus forward Will Fiacchi, who poured in 32 points, including a trio of 3-pointers and 11 successful free throws. Westhill meets Skaneateles (fresh off its remarkable late comeback to beat Marcellus) on Wednesday night, and the Bearcats get its turn with the Lakers Friday after meeting the other Lakers from Cazenovia on Tuesday.
