It hasn’t taken long for the West Genesee girls basketball team to establish its credentials as a contender in the fierce CNY Counties League. The Wildcats achieved a big win Tuesday night, against Nottingham, hanging on for a 50-48 victory over the Bulldogs. As a traditional Class AA power, Nottingham brought a diverse attack to Camillus. Between Javona Torrence (20 points) and Nikki Works (17 points), the Bulldogs continually answered everything WG threw at them. Still, the Wildcats stayed out in front most of the game. It took a 37-33 edge to the fourth quarter, then got clutch production from Stephanie Kotula, who had six of her 10 points in that final period. With the outcome still in doubt, Deanna Apps offered the final blow, hitting a key free throw with three seconds left to cap a night where she put up 15 points. Aside from Apps and Kotula, Carly DiCocco was the Wildcats’ main threat, earning eight points. Two nights later, WG went for three in a row, but had a tough non-league test against Cortland — and in fact, the Wildcats never got close, overwhelmed by the Purple Tigers in a 71-43 defeat. What at first seemed like an exciting contest turned in the second quarter as Cortland seemed to score at will against WG’s defense in a 20-10 outburst to build a 35-21 halftime advantage. As if that wasn’t enough, the Wildcats got just four points in the third period as the Purple Tigers pulled away. No WG player scored in double figures as Katie Kolinski led with eight points, Apps got seven points and DiCocco and Kerri Taylor six points apiece. By contrast, Cortland teammates Maggie Brown (23 points) and Courtney Tennant (20 points), by themselves, matched the entire Wildcat output. Back on Tuesday night, WG’s boys team went to Nottingham and saw its first-half struggles lead to a 64-53 loss to the Bulldogs. Unable to get much going in the face of Nottingham’s defense in the first half, WG saw the hosts steadily accumulate a 28-16 margin. And even when the baskets started to fall in the last two periods, the Bulldogs always seemed to have an answer — especially Roosevelt Bullock, who put up 30 points and nine steals. For its part, the Wildcats saw Nick Wood post 19 points, while Colin Monroe hit on four 3-pointers to account for most of his 16 points. Eric Spencer added 10 points. This was the first of six consecutive road games for WG (1-2), who visit Baldwinsville and Auburn next week. The girls Wildcats host both the Bees and Maroons before a Saturday trip to Oswego.
