For the good part of a decade, the Skaneateles girls volleyball team could do little more than play the foil to its neighbors from Marcellus as the Mustangs dominated the OHSL Liberty and Section III Class B ranks. Now, though, the Lakers are in charge, as it demonstrated once more by sweeping Marcellus in three games in front of its home fans last Tuesday night. A steady effort in the first game produced a 25-18 Laker win. The second game proved the lone scare, but Skaneateles won, 25-21, and that momentum carried over into a third game where the Lakers put together a 25-12 romp. On a diverse front line, Ryan Merle led with eight kills and three blocks. Emily Wood had six kills and three blocks, with Katherine Hill gaining five kills and three aces. Feeding them all, Gabby Eckles gained 15 assists as Colleen Cargile added three assists. In defeat, Marcellus saw Samantha Vulcano, with 20 assists, feed it to Devan Landers, with five kills, and Kim Duck and Nicole Fletcher, each with four kills and four blocks. Skaneateles remains at home Thursday night to face Solvay.
