Following a split of its Buffalo-area trip to open the season, the Skaneateles ice hockey team got its chance to test itself against the Division II West foes it will see all winter. And the first one didn’t prove too difficult, as the Lakers went to Cicero Twin Rinks last Friday night and toyed with Central Square in a 6-0 shutout of the Red Hawks. Skaneateles constantly attacked the Central Square net throughout the game, accumulating 55 shots. Yet it only led, 3-0, through two periods, thanks to the spectacular work of Red Hawks goalie Jeff Benjamin. Finally, the Lakers got clear, as six different players — Packy Jones, Mike Benson, Tom Jones, Sean Cooney, Dylan VanHoltz and Brendan Major — got the six goals. Packy Jones added two assists, with Seth Weiss also getting two assists. Jim Rodgers and Scott Longtin had one assist apiece. Trevor Diamond stopped all 14 shots he faced. On Wednesday night, Sknaeateles has its home opener against Solvay at the Community Center before a key Friday trip to Onondaga Nation Arena to meet CBA/J-D.
