The Liverpool wrestling team’s 2009-10 season kicked off Wednesday night with a trip to Fayetteville-Manlius and a hard-fought 39-31 victory over the Hornets. Down 6-0 early, Liverpool went ahead for good with four straight match wins, starting at 171 pounds, where Brendan Capria pinned F-M’s Jordan Kalli. After a forfeit to Joe Pizzuto (189 pounds), Mike Reed dominated at 215 pounds, taking just 39 seconds to pin Mick O’Bryan. Kyle Gordon followed at 285 pounds with a 5-1 decision over Sam Wells. Even though F-M would try to rally, the Warriors kept coming up with timely points. Casey Guilfoil, at 112 pounds, pinned Tim Byrnes 22 seconds into the third period, while Tyler Eason won a tough 125-pound match over Tom Quinlan 10-9. Justin Isabella (135 pounds) and Derek Eason (152 pounds) both would get forfeits. As this was going on, Cicero-North Syracuse had a tough season-opener last Wednesday against Corcoran, who came into the Northstars’ gym and beat the hosts 38-33. Corcoran bolted out to a 24-0 lead, two of those wins coming through forfeits, though Lamont Fleming (160 pounds) and Karvin Cox (189 pounds) both claimed pins. Finally, the Northstars got on the board at 103 pounds when Dan Ciccarelli pinned Nader McCray in a scant 1:10, the start of a stretch where CNS won five of six matches. Nate Fuss (112 pounds) also had a quick pin, finishing off Corey Chavis in 50 seconds, while Tony Battista (119 pounds) needed 3:47 for his pin over Shihk Frazier. Pat Dyer, at 130 pounds, claimed a forfeit before Kiel Dyer engaged in a 135-pound classic against Kareeb Howard, pulling out a 4-3 decision. For the clinching points, Corcoran won the next two matches, as Matt Dunham (140 pounds) fell to Markeem Chaplin in a technical fall and James Segars (145 pounds) took a 4-2 defeat to Emmanuel Chanelo. Todd Haggard (152 pounds) pinned Tial Thang with 22 seconds left. CNS will host the big Andersen Tournament (drawing teams from all over the state) on Saturday, just as Liverpool visits Camden for a non-league meet.
