Still in its developmental stages, the Cicero-North Syracuse ice hockey program looks to turn a corner toward more prosperity in the 2009-10 season. The Northstars went 12-12 a season ago, but only had a 3-11 mark against Section III Division I opponents, something it knows it must improve. To start a new season, it put together the CNS Showcase, played Thanksgiving weekend at the Cicero Twin Rinks, and would finish with a split. In Friday’s game against Shaker, the Northstars took a 4-1 defeat, as Shaker overcame a scoreless first period and pulled away in the late going. Kyle Seigle had CNS’s lone goal, in the second period, as Brad Monroe and Justin Tyler got the assists. Otherwise, Shaker goalie Jim Lane turned away everything, as he recorded 33 saves. Shaker would also beat Fayetteville-Manlius 4-0 on Saturday for a tournament sweep. Up against CBA/J-D on Saturday, the Northstars rode superb performances from Brian Hamilton and Cody Spadaro to a 4-2 victory over the Brothers. CNS ran out to a 2-1 lead in the first period. CBA/J-D tied it, 2-2, but in the third period Hamilton and Spadaro led the Northstars as it scored twice and tightened up on defense, too. Overall, Hamilton and Spadaro each scored twice, with Hamilton assisting on both of Spadaro’s scoring plays. Monroe helped both of them, finishing with three assists. CNS has its league opener Wednesday night, playing Liverpool at State Fair Coliseum, before a weekend trip to the north country for games against Canton and Potsdam.
