Since they play in separate divisions, it’s rare to see the CBA/J-D and Fayetteville-Manlius ice hockey teams square off. Yet there stood the Brothers and Hornets on Friday afternoon, playing in the Cicero-North Syracuse Showcase at Cicero Twin Rinks — which also happens to serve as F-M’s home ice throughout the winter. And the two sides would settle nothing, as they played to a 1-1 tie. Taylor Furst, off a feed from Brendan Flanagan, scored to put CBA/J-D in front in the second period, only to see F-M answer with Anthony Angello’s third-period goal. John Bonsted and Jimmy Angelicola got credit for assists. For the rest of the game — at the start, and through overtime — the defenses would rule. F-M got more scoring chances, but CBA/J-D goalie Dan DiStefano recorded 22 saves to make sure his team never trailed. F-M goalie Matt Schneider had 13 saves. Neither team would win on Saturday. CBA/J-D got on the board against host CNS and were tied, 2-2, going into the third period, but lost 4-2 as the Northstars’ Brian Hamilton carried his side with two goals and two assists. Josh Rathbun and Harry Kalet had the Brothers’ goals. Meanwhile, F-M ran into Shaker and lost, 4-0, with most of the damage rendered by Shaker in a three-goal second period. Tyler Palmerton played in goal for F-M and finished with 19 saves. F-M is coming off a 2008-09 season where it went 16-5-2 and fell in the Section III Division I semifinals to Baldwinsville. Many key seniors from that team have departed, including first-team All-Division I goalie Mike Poppleton and defenseman Ron Caputo. As for CBA/J-D, it went 9-13 and missed the playoffs by finishing fifth in Division II West (only the top four teams qualify). In a busy opening week, the Brothers play Ontario Bay at the War Memorial on Tuesday, then host Central Square and Auburn on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, at Onondaga Nation Arena. F-M, after meeting Auburn Tuesday at the Twin Rinks, plays in the Fulton Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
