Baldwinsville cross country junior Shaun Thompson’s superb performance helped the Section III All-Stars beat the rest of the field at last Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA championship meet at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Thompson took full advantage of tame mid-November running conditions and worked himself into contention in a field of 108 runners, featuring both the top teams and individuals in the AA ranks. On Plattsburgh’s 3.1-mile course, Thompson finished in 15 minutes, 37.5 seconds, which put him in third place. Only North Rockland’s Nick Hughes (15:26.3) and Ward Melville’s Quinn Raseman (15:31.5) beat Thompson to the line. Thompson was the leader of the Section III All-Star unit that, with 165 points, doubled the total of runner-up Section I (326 points) to finish in front. Right behind Thompson, Steve Houghmaster (West Genesee) took fourth place, in 15:40.2. Chris Buchanan (Cicero-North Syracuse) ran to eighth place, in 15:45.3, with Liverpool teammates Alex Wilke (15:59.6) and Anthony Brais (16:17.7) 17th and 35th, respectively. It was all part of a clean sweep for Section III in the Class AA races. Fayetteville-Manlius took both the state boys and girls championships, and the Section III girls individual runners took their title, too.
